Base-station emissions and health concerns

The EMF Discussion Group meeting went well; Sir William Stewart invited us to be open and honest with our opinions, leading to a healthy debate. Details will follow when the group have had time to review the minutes of the meeting.

Please find a copy of my presentation and feel free to distribute to everyone and anyone.

On the Precautionary Approach and the Stewart & NRPB Reports

http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/stewart_and_innirp.doc

As we all know, the Stewart Report, April 2000, advocated ‘a precautionary approach’. Since then both the Government and the industry, with the wholehearted backing of the NRPB, have claimed that this need for a ‘precautionary approach’ is fully satisfied by adopting the ICNIRP guidelines. That is the basis of Government policy on masts, enshrined in the assertion in PPG8 that “if a proposed mobile phone base station meets the ICNIRP guidelines for public exposure it should not be necessary … to consider further the health aspects and concerns about them.” This passage in PPG8 has led to numerous court rulings against individuals, local groups and local authorities claiming that ICNIRP guidelines don’t offer sufficient protection, and in many cases to massive costs awards against those making such claims (implying that those claims are unreasonable).

Ok, so let’s look at what the Stewart Report actually had to say about the ‘Precautionary Principle’ – this text is reiterated in the NRPB Report, 2004 (published January 2005):

“The balance of evidence suggests that exposures to radiation below NRPB and ICNIRP guidelines do not cause adverse health effects to the general population.

“There is now scientific evidence, however, which suggests that there may be biological effects occurring at exposures below these guidelines.

"We conclude therefore that it is not possible at present to say that exposure to RF radiation, even at levels below national guidelines, is totally without potential adverse health effects, and that the gaps in knowledge are sufficient to justify a precautionary approach.

"We recommend that a precautionary approach to the use of mobile phone technologies be adopted until much more detailed and scientifically robust information on any health effects becomes available."

Note that the specific reason for advocating a precautionary approach is scientific evidence that exposure at levels “below NRPB and ICNIRP guidelines” may have adverse health effects. How, in the name of all that’s rational, can the ICNIRP guidelines be reckoned to satisfy the need for a ‘precautionary approach’ that is specifically advocated PRECISELY BECAUSE scientific evidence indicates that there may be effects that those guidelines don’t cover???

Consider the following hypothetical situation – you may spot similarities:

School governors’ meeting

“Folks, we have a problem. I’ve been told that old Jake, the school caretaker, may be a child-molester.”

“Oh dear, what can we do about that?”

“I know, we can ask old Jake, the school caretaker, to keep a lookout for any possible child-molesters.”

“Great. That’s sorted then. No-one can accuse use of not taking good care of our kids.”

The section on ‘Public Health Concerns’ in the NRPB Report, 2004, ends with the following statement:

“The Board believes that the main conclusions reached in the Stewart Report in 2000 still apply today and that a precautionary approach to the use of mobile phone technologies should continue to be adopted.”

It could be strongly argued that a precautionary approach advocated specifically as a result of scientific evidence that ICNIRP guidelines may be inadequate for protection of health, but purportedly ‘implemented’ simply by following those same guidelines, is no precaution at all. Rather, it is a very un-subtle attempt to claim to be doing all that’s necessary whilst actually doing nothing – which could be validly construed as gross negligence.

Certainly it would seem to be a very strong argument against any costs ruling (since it shows that lack of confidence in ICNIRP certification is not unreasonable, but supported by scientific evidence as witnessed by the Stewart and NRPB Reports) – I’m not a lawyer, but I’ve been told by one who is that appealing against a costs ruling is not expensive and could save very large amounts of money. More than that, it could be a basis for questioning Government policy in respect of Human Rights.

Views on this from anyone with legal knowledge would be welcome. Meanwhile, irrespective of the legal ‘take’, this shows the total cynicism of the official claim to be adopting ‘a precautionary approach’.

Brain tumour cluster in video cameramen at BBC Pebble Mill

17/9/06 From the on the wires

THE BBC was at the centre of a cancer scare last night after six cameramen who worked at the Pebble Mill studios were found to have brain tumours.

Experts fear that radiation from video camera viewfinders may have caused the six men, who had been employed at the Birmingham centre, to develop tumours.

Worried bosses fired off an urgent memo requesting the names of other staff suffering from similar complaints, even if they were no longer working for the corporation.

Equipment

The memo, sent out by health and safety official John Howcroft, read: "Around six ex-cameramen have developed brain tumours. "This number seems too high to be a coincidence and preliminary discussions are focusing on radiation from viewfinders as a possible cause. "We need to determine how widespread this problem is. "If any of you are aware of camera operators with the condition, could you send me all the information you have at the earliest opportunity." The six workers all worked at the now defunct Pebble Mill TV complex. The corporation has since moved into Birmingham's new Mailbox shopping mall site.

But further inquiries have been ordered because identical camera equipment has been used for years at other BBC studios across the country.

High levels of radiation emitted from powerful electronics can damage the brain but a TV camera viewfinder normally emits only low, safe levels.

One radiation expert said last night: "There is a link between exposure to radiation and tumours but the levels emitted by a TV camera would, in normal circumstances, be too low. "If cameras are linked to these cases then something has gone seriously wrong." Radiation can cause tumours by disrupting the genetic make-up of biological cells, making them more susceptible to aggressive cancers.

A BBC spokesman last night played down any possible links between electronic equipment and cancer. "We have found no link between camera equipment and the incidence of brain tumours but we are asking any concerned staff to come forward," he said. Mr Howcroft declined to comment on his department's memo.

Inquiry into BBC cluster of brain tumours

HEALTH and safety officials are investigating a cluster of brain tumours among cameramen who worked at the Pebble Mill studios in Birmingham. The cases sparked fears that radiation from video camera viewfinders may be linked to the tumours. However, the BBC played down the concerns, saying it had investigated and found no link between equipment and brain-tumour risk. Last week, John Howcroft, a health and safety official for the Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union, sent a memo to staff about the brain tumour cases at the old studios. It read: “This number seems too high to be a coincidence and preliminary discussions are focusing on radiation from viewfinders as a possible cause.”

1. Robert, Kirriemuir / 3:53pm 18 Sep 2006 Observation like this does not surprise me. I purchase one of those TFT monitors and discovered that it was rapidly affecting my eyesight when I could feel the strain on my eyes accompanied by dullish headaches and double vision. On changing back to the CRT model those problems dispersed. Whether the problem was due to the TFT technology or the make of the one I possessed I am unable to say but, of course, I am wondering how many others are affected and what affect this technology is having on viewers.

Eileen O'Connor 's mast fight continues

Oct 5 2006

Wishaw campaigner Eileen O'Connor will give a high-profile speech to an industry watchdog in London this month about how she believes a mobile phone mast gave her breast cancer.

Meanwhile Mrs O'Connor, diagnosed with the disease five years ago aged just 38, is busy organising a ball celebrating her return to health.

She has fought a long battle against masts, claiming that antennae erected 100 metres from her home by TMobile - and subsequently felled by anonymous protesters - had made her ill.

Mrs O'Connor is now a trustee of the Radiation Research Trust (RRT), which is campaigning for safer siting of masts while trying to fund extra research into their health effects.

At a meeting of the Health Protection Agency in London on October 16, Mrs O'Connor will give a presentation of her concerns that exposure to electromagnetic fields might increase the risk of breast cancer and other diseases.

The body is chaired by Sir William Stewart, who in his work with the Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones warned that there was no certainty that masts and phones are safe.

Mrs O'Connor said she was glad to be still alive so she could address the meeting - and has arranged a celebratory, fundraising ball for the RRT at Wishaw Golf Club on November 18.

She said: "People can take measures to help avoid EMFs by using mobile phones for emergency calls only. Stop using DECT phones, replace them with a fixed land-line phones and also avoid wireless communication until a safer technology becomes available.

"I believe we are finally getting closer to a breakthrough and will hopefully find the connection between EMFs and breast cancer as we cannot allow the relentless rise in breast cancer to continue.

"It has been a difficult five years coming to terms with breast cancer at a young age. However, it has been a great privilege to be involved within a cuttingedge campaign to gain recognition to possibly one of the biggest connections to this terrible disease and I am honoured to be in a position to represent the many people who are suffering throughout the world."

Eileen remembers her "difficult five years":

"In a celebration of life and being almost five years clear from cancer, I've decided to raise the roof and have a ball and raise money for the RRT.

"I have come a long way with the campaign against phone masts with the support of the RRT, SCRAM (Sutton Coldfield Residents Against Masts), doctors, and independent scientists, some politicians, the media and the many campaigners throughout the world.

"This is a landmark time for me and I'm almost scared to say that I'm now almost five years clear from breast cancer. I visited my doctor on November 5, 2001 covered in a horrific skin rash from head to toe and a lump in my breast.

"The lump removed on November 13 and I was diagnosed on November 20, 2001. The moment I heard those terrible words "I'm sorry, it's cancer", I knew I was given this awful disease for a reason.

"At first I thought I was supposed to go on to become a counsellor and help people with cancer, as I was into my second year training to become a counsellor; I went on to learn how to counsel people who are dying with cancer, and my eyes have been opened to the harsh heartbreaking realities of life.

"However, I now believe the real reason was to fight against what I truly believe is one of the biggest causes of cancer on the planet and I believe this is my destiny."

She added: "I do have periods when I want to stop the world and get off and go back to a normal life. I really enjoyed the six weeks' holidays off with my family and thought I never wanted to return to the campaign ever again - if only.

"However, here I am, back in the thick of it and beginning to prepare for my presentation for the EMF Discussion Group at the Health Protection Agency on October 16. I want to make an impact and hope I can hold my nerves as I realise how important this is.

"I'm sure I will be fine as I have many angels walking with me and helping along the way."

l Wishaw's Winter Black Tie & Tiara Ball runs from 7pm till late.

Tickets costing £40 are being snapped up very quickly. Mrs O'Connor said: "Funds raised will help create awareness and understanding for the serious condition known as electro-sensitivity and further research into cancer and genetic vulnerability to electro-magnetic fields.

"With your help we will continue the campaign for law and policy change demanding safer technology and sensible locations for phone masts, electric pylons and wireless communication.

"Please help to make our first Ball a night to remember, full of fun and laughter in a celebration of life, while raising money for this important global issue."

Raffle and auction prizes are needed, adding to the luxury hamper from Samworth Brothers and signed Villa shirt already donated.

Call 0121 351 2437 or e-mail eileen@ smokestackltd.co.uk for tickets, to donate prizes, or to book advertising space in the order of service for the evening.

"Misguided" ban on mobiles

This article appeared in the Daily Mail this morning.

"Hospitals accused over "misguided" ban on mobiles." Hospitals should not ban mobile phones over "mythical" risks to patients, say experts. They believe the benefits far outweigh the negligible dangers of using mobiles near sensitive medical equipment and accuse managers of hiding behind over-zealous safety concerns. Freeing up restrictions could benefit doctors and other health staff, while patients would not have to use expensive bedside phones systems. An editorial in the British Medical Journal today accuses hospitals of acting in a draconian fashion in banning mobiles. Sociology lecturer Dr. Adam Burgess of Kent University, and Dr. Stuart Derbyshire, of Birmingham University say there is no evidence they cause problems in most wards. A 1997 study by the Medical Devices Agnecy showed mobiles affected just four per cent of medical devices at a distance of one metre. But the figure was ten times higher for the handsets used by porters and emergency services personnel. The intereference was "ultimately harmless" although it could trigger alarms and meant electrocardiograph recordings had to be repeated. Dr. Burgess said phones affected pacemeakers but only when they were held against the patient's chest. He said ringtones could be irritating but were not a risk, adding "Concerns about patient safety do not justify zealously enforced no-phone areas, which can cause arguments between staff, patients and visitors". And he claimed the motives for hospital managers maintaining no-mobile zones were open to question, as they might lose revenue from companies that run pay-as-you-go bedside line services. Bans are an easy target for managers in an era of anxiety about patient safety. But many patients would prefer using their own mobiles rather than costly in-house systems. He added: "Restrictions on mobile phone use can be implemented easily because they seem relatively inconsequential, and the restrictions make people think safety concerns are being taken seriously." But Dr. Burgess fears managers could still bring in rules to keep mobiles out of wards, perhaps by barring camera phones to protect patient's privacy. The practical problems of identifying such phones might lead to a total ban in practice. He said, "We want hospital managers and clinical directors to adopt a more flexible approach to the use of mobile phones on the basis that the advantages clearly outweigh their largely mythical risks." An agency spokesman said there should not be a blanket ban. But he added: "The agency recommends mobile phones are not used in critical care areas such as intensive therapy units, special care baby units or where patients are attached to complex devices."

Regards, V.

(note - the word "mythical" appearing and Dr. Burgess is back on the scene!)

--------

There is quite clearly an MOA agenda here - firstly because the thrust is solely on decrying the risk associated with mobile phone radiation and, secondly, because that well-known buffoon Burgess has been let out of the Mad Hatter's company to tell his traditional fairy stories.

Ten years ago, I fell off the roof and shattered my left knee and tibia. Surgery to rebuild the damage was carried out on the following day and I spent a further 9 days in a hospital ward of 12 occupied, and quite tightly packed, beds. Think of the future as considered acceptable by these fools - the prospect of people lying for days on end in pain or considerable discomfort at the same time surrounded by punters chattering inanely on their mobiles for 24 hrs a day. What price recovery?

David

--------

I have just sent this to the BBC:

I believe your recent story 'Doctors attack mobile phone rules' shows significant bias toward the mobile phone industry's stand point. As well as the risk of equipment malfunctions which was not ruled out the major risk to recovering patients is the microwave signals used by these devices. These signals have been shown time and time again to cause biological damage; double-strand DNA breaks (see http://tinyurl.com/y8r2ce - a direct stepping stone to cancer, damaging the blood brain barrier ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2053565.stm ) etc. See http://www.schnews.co.uk/archive/news561.htm for a very informative article. Do you think someone recovering from cancer should be using a mobile phone? Your story has not taken any of these risks into account and has actually put the words 'Mythical Risks' in bold. While your story has focused only on risks to equipment malfunction, the fact that these other risks are ignored gives the impression that equipment malfunction risks are the only ones that should be taken into account. Do you not consider this a form of lying by omission? Every time I have seen a story that touches on the scientific evidence of health risks, the mobile phone industry is given a chance to lambaste the research with some well spun propaganda, however when the mobile phone industry puts out a PR story I do not see the same opportunities given to the many groups who are trying to raise awareness of these very real, well researched, peer reviewed and proven dangers. I consider this to be biased reporting on an issue that desperately needs to be highlighted.

Usfie (Osfia) Cancer Cluster

The mayor gets rid of all the antennas - First place in the world: No antennas and no phones anymore http://omega.twoday.net/stories/657843/

Enclosed are some facts from Israel, the town of Usfie, sitting on the long top of Mount Carmel:

A cancer cluster was observed only in a narrow strip on which ~40 cellphone antennae plus ~15 illegal ('pirate') radio stations were posted: Cluster involved 189 sick, mostly cancers (but some stroke or neural diseae), of which 85 deceased (up to November 29, 2004). Injuries were associated with increased depression and suicidal incidence. The high students' academic achievements, dropped to last in the country, wild birds left town, and frequent birth malformations were obserbved in domestic animals.

We have full records and documents for 87 cases (sick and dead), but partial if any medical documents (besides diagnoses) for the rest (about half of them rest in peace already). The sick / dead lived close to (one or several) antenna, up to 300 meters in few cases. Medical records and information, were collected by a dedicated women committee, chaired by Mrs Myra Abuzluf, by a door to door search.

When sick and dead, and antennae were superimposed by Col. (ret) Suleiman Aburokan (Vice city mayor), on topographic city map, a grim cancer cluster appeared: http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/grim_cancer_cluster_usfien150099.jpg
http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/zamir_shalita_usfien_15008.jpg
Explaining the legend from Dr. Zamir Shalita (colored points): The blue labels are for high 1st generation masts, the yellow are for 40 cellphone + illegal radio stations transmitting to Arab countries, the green are for the sick, mostly cancer, and red are for the dead.

One picture is more effective than thousand words !

Some history: On March 14, 2000, the ' antennae of '1st antennal generation' in town, were burned down by rage citizens, after no one in authorities admitted citizens' antennal inflicted injuries. Only five of those responsible for antennal damage, were prosecuted and fined (NIS 2,000 each =US$ ~456.-) for "order disturbance, and damage to property" or similar charges.

No one was sued by the owners of the equipment turned to ashes (millions of US$ worth)...

Later on, comouflaged antennae made remarkable comback, and injuries just increased until present time.

Please see for yourselves,

Zamir Shalita

A Cancer cluster in Usfie, Israel
(preliminary notice)

AbuRuken, S1., AbuZalaf M.2.,AbuRuken N.2 AbuSada F.2 Millak E.2 Nsar Z.2, Richter ED, MD3, and Shalita ZP, Ph.D4

Correspondending author, Consultant on electromagnetic hazards. shalita@shani.net

Usfie was established by Druz settlers in the early 1600ies, on Mount Carmel ridge (546 m over sea level). This site enabled long range observation, both to north and south, for early warning. At present Usfie is well developed, mostly Druz town, with some minorities of Arabs (Christian and Moslem), and Jews. Usfie location seemed excellent also for long range radio / cellular communications.

In recent 40 years high mast communication antennae were posted mostly along two east to west streets on the ridge. They involved forest fire alert, government, police, military, taxicabs, and emergency medical communication, followed by additional deployed cellphone and illegal radio stations. All antennae together yielded 15 high masts of 20 – 80 m, as well as 46 lower masts for cellphone and illegal radio antennae.

In the 1990ies, Usfie residents living in vicinity of those antennae, were increasingly complaining of dizziness, headaches sleep disturbance, discomfort, depression. Later on, residents were diagnosed with various sorts of cancers, as well as with strokes, abortions, and neural diseases. Residents reported also of disappearance of wild birds, and increased incidence of birth malformation in domestic animals.

Residents' complaints, were consistently ignored or rejected by ministries of environment and of health, on grounds of alleged 'genetic factors', and 'very low radiation', although power densities monitored were unsafe to risky in some areas, of up to 27 µW/cm2. while cancer and other severe ailments diagnosed, continued to climb.

On March 14, 2000, several rage citizens burned down most antennae in town. Some antennae were disassembled later by support of the ministry of envirnment, three illegal radio antennae were disassembled by court order, while one (“Cellcom”) mast remained. Five of the activists that destroyed the antennae, were prosecuted for "order disturbance, and damage to property", and were fined for ~$560.- each. However, no charges were pressed by owners of transmitters and other millions of dollars worth equipment, that was turned to rubble that day.
Later on, antennae made nocturnal comback, confidentially disguised as solar systems, water tanks, or commercial signs, etc. Incidence of injuries soared to 191 individuals (diagnosed up to November 30. 2004) mostly with cancers, but also strokes, and neural ailments, and others, that claimed 85 fatalities.

Medical records and pertinent information of the presently ill, and the deceased, were collected by a door to door search of devoted women's committee (cancer patients themselves), headed by Mrs Myra AbuZalaf (that recovered from a stroke). This search yielded detailed documentation and data for 87 mostly cancer patients (of which 20 deceased). Data included name, ID #, gender, age, occupation, distance of residence from antennae, and date diagnosed and / or deceased, No further detailed medical documentation could be achieved (except diagnosis) for the rest 104 injured (including 39 deceased).

Severe ailments in Usfie during last decade involved 26 (of which 17 deceased) with colon & rectal cancers, 21 (15) with brain cancers, 21 (19) with hepatic cancers, 14 (1) with strokes, 13 (3) with breast cancers, 10 (2) with gastric cancers, 10 (0) with ocular cancers, 8 (3) with lymphmas, 5 (3) with bone cancers, 5 with severe neurological damage, 4 (2) with lung cancers, 4 (2) with leukemias, 4 (1) with skin cancers, 4 (0) with nasopharyngeal cancers, 2 (0) with joints cancers, 1(1) pancreatic cancer, 1(1) prostate cancer, 1(1) uterus cancer 1(0) cancer in a finger and 36 (15) cancer with no further information. All together morbidities increased to 191 of which 85 deceased.

The houses of the sick and the deceased, as well as antennal locations, were superimposed on a 1:5000 topographic city map (attached): A grim picture indicated of a cancer cluster combined of small clusters, mainly in a narrow strip, in central (old) town residential zone, on which 46 cellphone antennae, plus 15 illegal ('pirate') radio stations were posted.

In addition to severe ailments, increased depression and suicidal incidence have been recorded, and Usfie high students' academic achievements, dropped to lowest grade in the country. The sick / deceased lived close to (one or several) antennae, up to 300 m in all zones. The rest zones where no antennae have been posted, included >6,000 of Usfie residents.

Prior to any statistical analysis, just simple percentage calculations, showed the following zones of morbidity / mortality on the map, depending of periods of exposure:

1. Eastern zone, in which the high mast (one blue dot on the map), and lower masts (yellow dots), posted up to the late 1990ies. The population of ~500, suffered 7 sick (6, green dots, +1 diagnosed later) and 2 deceased (1, red on the map + 1 deceased later).
Calculation: 9 injured per ~500, was 1.8%. In general population average cancer incidence in Israel was ~290 per 100,000, that was 0.29%. i.e. injured were x6.2 compared to general Israeli population.

2. Central zone, namely the old town of Usfie, in which the antennae have been assembled since the late 1960ies, and up to mid 1990ies, among population of ~3,000. It yielded 58 sick and 64 deceased.
Calculation: 122 injured per 3,000, was 4.07%. In general population average cancer incidence in Israel was ~290 per 100,000, that was 0.29%. i.e.injured were x14.02 compared to general Israeli population.

3. Christian zone (between the center and the veterans zone) in which population was ~1,000, whose antennae assembled as in central zone. They suffered 14 sick and 9 deceased.
Calculation: 23 injured per ~1,000, was 2.3%. In general population average cancer incidence in Israel was ~290 per 100,000, that was 0.29%. i.e. injured were x7.93 compared to general Israeli population.

4. Western (veterans) zone, The population of ~1,000, whose antennae assembled as in central zone. They suffered 22 sick, and 7 deceased, but several new diagnosed cancer cases have been informed later.
Calculation: 29 injured per ~1,000, was 2.9%. In general population average cancer incidence in Israel was ~290 per 100,000, that was 0.29%. i.e. injured were x10.0 compared to general Israeli population.

5. 'Scattered' zone (between Usfie and Daliat el Carmel). Population of ~1,500 included residents that lived near antennae in the past, or have lived in vision of antenna. They suffered 5 sick and 3 deceased.
Calculation: 8 injured per ~1,500, wais 0.53%. In general population average cancer incidence in Israel was ~290 per 100,000, that was 0.29%. i.e. injured were x1.83 compared to general Israeli population.

6. Beduin zone (far west) , with population of ~1500. The antennae were assembled at mid 1990ies, but were disassembled after ~2 years. Thus in relevant period, no sick and no deceased have been recorded in this area.

It was estimated that residents not exposed to remarkable antennal emissions, including the latter group was of >6,000 residents.
In short: the enclosed map shows that one picture is more effective than thousand words!
Calculation for total injuries incidence in exposed zones 1 - 5 : Total injured were 191, per exposed population of ~7000 was 2.73%, In general population average cancer incidence in Israel was ~290 per 100,000, that was 0.29%. Thus, incidence of all injured in all affected zones, were x9.41 compared to general population.

The data of zones #2 (central), #3 (Christian) and #4 (western - veterans') was also laid of aerial photograph (attached) showing these zones from right to left. A close up of zones #2 and #3 (attached) showed houses of injured and terrain in more details.

Almost all cancer and other severe morbidities were diagnosed in Usfie, in residents living on the south side of the ridge, near the antennae posted along two streets. The ever blowing winds from the Mediteranean Sea, to Usfie, heading to Haifa, strongly negated the posibility that heavy chemical pollution in Haifa might have caused morbidity also in Usfie.

Past attempts at the ministry of health to associate cancer in Usfie with genetic factors, seemed irresponsible when mentioned (2001). As map exhibited clearly that cancer cluster was just in vicinity to antennae along two east to west streets on the ridge. in central zone in town, the ‘genetic theory’ was rejected, for being totally false.

Practically speaking, cellphone antennae in Usfie have to transmit strongly in order to offer good service to callers in narrow streets between the high buildings, and due to the hilly area of Usfie. Illegal radio stations in Usfie, received calls from listeners living in Irbid (Jordan), and in Tyr (Lebanon). Thus in order to reach such remote listeners, stations have had to transmit strongly.

Although past power density measurements revealed up to 27 µW/cm2, (for example, near Hamade bakery, as measured by a tester of the ministry of environment on 23-10-2003) no measures have been taken by authorities to protect the citizens of Usfie. Other unsafe levels were recorded (further analyses are in progress). Unfortunately, present power density readings showed very low radiation. It exhibited that upon measurement, the transmission operators, observed the testers by their long and yellow power density meters, that were easily recognized from a distance. So stations output were markedly lowered... However, spectrum analyzer detected all cellular and radio frequencies that were on the air.

Those frequencies were perfectly allocated and coordinated between the transmitting companies, as well as the early warning between each other, on first sight of testers…

Confidential measurement with a small power density meter, revealed ~10 µW/cm2, at a kindergarten. It should be compared to 5 µW/cm2, revealed in the past in the irradiated American Embassy in Moscow during the ‘cold war’, for ~20 years: The radar beam (pulsed like cellular emissions) caused chromosomal aberrations, leukemia and more, to about half of American embassy team and family members, whose symptoms showed significant dose-response relationships.

On the attached map: Blue dots are for early high masts, yellow - cellphone and illegal radio antennae,
green - cancer patients, and red for those died from cancer.

Usfie Map key

Blue- 15 communication masts, over 15 meters
Yellow- 46 cellular and radio masts up to 15 meters
Green- 106 cancer patients
Red- 85 people deceased (reason: cancer).

* Our health authorities say they have no data to calculate from, so they don't know it and can't confirm it, even after they saw the map. The cancer registration manager says he had difficulties collecting data, so he left what he started. But the mayor answered that Usfie is not a refugee camp, and there is cancer registration for the city. This data is taken by door to door, collecting the medical files of the patients. Our health authorities say that the reason for the cancer in Usfie is a genetic problem they have, but the medical files don't support this claim. It is quite an interesting "genetic" problem, which attacks only the citizens who live near masts, and not the others, according to the map.

--------

1. In Israel, in period of the number of major diagnosed cancers in Usfie (i.e. up to year 2000), had to be compared to the cancer incidence in general population at that period (based on ministry of health tatistics of ~2900 diagnosed per 100,000 per anuum.

2. The exact time per zone is not available at the moment, for several reasons:

a. The antennae (first strong communication, then cellphone + illegal radio) were posted in different times, but mainly in the central zone (2nd from right on the map, and 1st from the right on the aerial photo http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/usfiemap_0200.jpg). The longer period of exposure, yielded the large number of cancers diagnosed in the central zone compared to the others. The far west zone (far left on the map, and partly not in picture) on which antennae have not been for two years, has not yielded any cancer diagnosed.

b. We would not be able to get the exact dates when antennae were posted, neither from official sources (that would not like to cooperate), nor from cellphone companies mostly from illegal radio operators...

c. We are not able to say at the moment how long was latency period of cancer until diagnosed, for you can see on the aerial photo, that the cluster is composed of small clusters in the vicinity of the antennae, in different slopes and direct lines of sight of the antennae, if any. We like to get into details of exposure in the houses, thus a lot of work has to be done in the 'field', and then in analyzing each small cluster.

We have reports of radiation measured by a tester of the ministry of environment, but it is far from covering all.

At present, when we tried to measure radiation, the antennae operators watched us and lowered output remarkably, and pass the alarm to all... They did not turned the antennae off, for they had to give service, and I could get the antennae still by my spectrum analyzer. I have all frequencies peaks, and even revealed what was licensed, and what was illegal...

We have started study the relevant aspects of this cluster, including statistical analysis, led by Dr Richter.

I along with my colleagues from the EM Radiation Research Trust Chairman Mike Bell and Dr Gerard Hyland attended the Benevento Conference in February. Dr Hyland gave another one of his brilliant presentations and his name is included on this impressive list of scientists. It was a great honour and privilege to meet the many brilliant scientists who have signed this resolution. We owe a debt of gratitude to them for their continued dedication and commitment researching this serious issue with the limited funds available. Urgent funding needs to be released to this trusted group of scientists in order to continue with this important work. There is an opportunity within this appeal for doctors and scientists to add their names to the list; please show your support.

Thank you to the Mayor and people of Benevento and special thanks to Libby Kelly for organising such an important and historic event.

Growth assessment of children exposed to low frequency electromagnetic fields at the Abu Sultan area in Ismailia (Egypt)

A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the growth of 780 children of both sexes, aged between 0-12 years, and living at two different areas in Ismailia, Egypt, with approximately similar socioeconomic standards. Based on a designed questionaire, the exposed group was formed of 390 children from the Abu Sultan area. They were chosen from families living within 50 meters nearby high voltage electric power lines. Another 390 children from the El-Sheikh Zayed area were chosen as the control group. Standard anthropometric measurements were carried out for each child. Plain X-ray was done on the hands of 200 randomly selected children from both groups (100 each) to assess their bone maturation. In the exposed group the weight was significantly decreased only at birth, while the circumferences of the head and chest as well as the height were significantly reduced at all studied ages. The radiological study revealed a significant delay in carpal bone ossification of the exposed children. In conclusion: Exposure to low frequency electromagnetic fields emerged from high voltage electric power lines increases the incidence of growth retardation of children. Isolating these power lines in a scientific way in order to shield both the magnetic and electric fields or removing them far away from the inhabitant areas is recommended.
